Case against CMEV withdrawn

[TamilNet, Saturday, 01 April 2000, 20:49 GMT]
The criminal defamation suit filed against the Centre for Monitoring Election Violence (CMEV) by Chandrasiri Gunawardene, a People's Alliance (PA) member, has been withdrawn on a directive by the Attorney General, said legal sources in Colombo.

Deputy Solicitor General, Palitha Fernando, told the Wattala Magistrate the Government's intention to withdraw the case, when it was taken up for hearing yesterday.

Earlier People's Alliance member of Wattala Pradeshiya Sabha, Chandrasiri Gunawardene, made a complaint to the Wattala Police against three Co-ordinators of the Centre for Monitoring Election violence, Pakiasothy Saravanamuthu, Arjuna Parakrama, and Waruna Karunatileke.

The Police had filed suit against the Co-ordinators based on this complaint.
