[TamilNet, Sunday, 09 April 2000, 20:09 GMT]
A Policeman was killed and a homeguard was wounded when unidentified gunmen lobbed a grenade at a check-post in Sri Lanka's hilly central province in the early hours of the morning around 2.50 a.m. The masked attackers had removed two T. 56 assault rifles from the check post Sri Lanka Police sources in Gampola in the Central Province said.

They claimed that the involvement of the Liberation Tigers was suspected and a search operation is on in the estates near the scene of the incident. The Police check post is at Moragolla on the road from Gampola to Kotmale.

The wounded home guard told Police investigators that the attackers had emerged from the bushes near the check post wearing black masks.

Police sources in Gampola said that investigators are also looking into the possibility of the involvement of army deserters in the attack.
