SLA soldier killed in Sithandy claymore blast

A Sri Lanka Army (SLA) soldier was killed and another wounded in a claymore mine attack at Sithandy, a town 15 kilometres north of Batticaloa, around 9.30 am this morning. The soldiers were on a route clearing patrol on the Valaichenai road when they were caught in the attack, sources said.

Claymore land mines are command-detonated.

The soldier killed in the blast was identified as Jeyawardene, 29. The wounded soldier, Dissanayake, 29, was admitted to Batticaloa hospital. Both were attached to the SLA camp at Sithandy.

The area of the explosion was tense following the attack and trafic was disrupted until 11 am while security forces cordoned off the area, the sources said.
