Shelling claim victims

[TamilNet, Thursday, 25 May 2000, 06:44 GMT]
Police sources in Batticaloa said that six civilians living close to the Sri Lanka army camp in a Batticaloa suburb were killed last night around 9.45 p.m. when a shell hit their garden.

The SLA base is located close to the coast in Batticaloa town's souther suburb of Kallady. Three civilians in the neighbourhood were wounded.

The Sri Lankan military in Batticaloa claimed that mortar fire aimed by the Liberation Tigers at the SLA camp was the cause of the deaths. The Tigers fired a mortar shell on the Sri Lankan airforce base last night.

The Liberation Tigers have been shelling army and SLAF camps and positions since Tuesday night.
