Casualties from Jaffna fighting[TamilNet, Saturday, 10 June 2000, 12:08 GMT]Twenty-five Sri Lanka Army (SLA) soldiers, including a senior officer, were killed and about 50 others were wounded in the heavy fighting that erupted at Sarasalai in the Jaffna peninsula yesterday, SLA sources in Colombo said. The fighting erupted when the troops launched an attack on the LTTE positions in the area, the sources said. An offensive assault by the Sri Lanka Army (SLA) in the Sarasalai area of the Jaffna peninsula was repulsed Friday with heavy casualties, the Liberation Tigers said in a statement from their London offices. Meanwhile the Voice of Tigers radio gave the names of 8 civilians who were killed in shelling by the Sri Lanka Army in the Thenmaradchi area yesterday. The radio further gave names of 16 civilians wounded in the shelling.
