Sinhala nationalists contest in East

[TamilNet, Thursday, 31 August 2000, 14:23 GMT]
Two Sinhala nationalist parties are to contest in the next parliamentary elections in the eastern Batticaloa District. 'Bhumiputhra Party' or Sons of the Soil and 'Runhuna People's Party' filed their nominations Thursday, said sources.

The Bhumiputhra Party campaigns on the platform that the island belongs to the Sinhalese, and that all other ethnicities are recent settlers whose Citizenship rights should be stripped away.

N.Shankar, a Tamil from Kalkudah, and M.Mahbuhl, a Muslim from Colombo are contesting in the Bhumiputhra Party, according to the sources.

Ruhuna People's Party has also filed its nominations for the Vanni district.
