Two members of the Razeek Group, a paramilitray group operating as National Guard Battalion of the Sri Lanka Army were shot dead by unidentified gunmen on Wednesday afternoon around 3.45 at Paddiruppu junction, about 30 km south off Batticaloa town.
Vairamuthu Nesathurai alias Babu (35) of Kurumanveli and Francis Jeyarajah alias Ranjan (32) of Puthur were waiting at Paddiruppu junction to take a bus to Batticaloa, when they were shot at, sources said. The Police blamed the Liberation Tigers for the killings.
However, witnesses said that the shooting had occurred after an altercation with supporters of the EPRLF (Perumal faction) who were pasting election posters near the bus stop.
