Fire-fight in Valaichenai

Four soldiers were wounded when the Liberation Tigers and the Sri Lanka Army (SLA) clashed Sunday night in the Valaichenai area, about 32 kilometers north of Batticaloa, security sources said.

Clashes erupted when a group of LTTE fighters had attempted to infiltrate SLA controlled area, the sources said. It was not known if there were any LTTE casualties.

Residents in the area said fighting went on for nearly 30 minutes. The wounded SLA soldiers were air-lifted to Polonnaruwa hospital.

In a separate incident, a SLA soldier was killed and another wounded when the Liberation Tigers fired at soldiers at a sentry post at Muthaliyaarkulam in the Cheddikulam area, about 30 km. southwest of Vavuniya.
