SLA operation in Jaffna

Fierce fighting erupted in the Northern Jaffna peninsula as government troops launched a limited operation to advance towards Madduvil-North in the early hours of Sunday. Seven Sri Lanka Army soldiers were killed and 27 wounded in the fighting, said sources in Jaffna. Madduvil is about 3 km. north-west of chavakachcheri.
Security sources in Jaffna said that the army launched a limited operation around 5.30 a.m. Sunday morning. They claimed that the troops have gained some territories during the operation. Details of LTTE casualties were not known.
The Liberation Tigers and the SLA troops exchanged heavy artillery and mortar fire. The sounds of explosions echoed in Jaffna from this morning said residents in the northern town.
