SLA ambush kills one

Sri Lanka Army (SLA) soldiers lying in ambush in the jungles of Kirimichchaikulam in the Vaakarai region, about 62 km. north of Batticaloa opened fire, killing one civilian and injuring three others. According to villagers the incident occurred around 2 p.m. on Friday.

The civilian who was killed in the incident was identified as Velayutham Vasanthakumar,29. His funeral took place on Saturday, sources said.

The wounded civilians were identified as Sinnathamby Yokarasa,60, Aarumukam Chandramokan,22 and Aarumukam Mohan,31,

The villagers said the soldiers were attached to a SLA camp at Karaikulam in the boarder between Polonnaruwa and Batticaloa districts.

Local non-governmental organisations have condemned the attack, the sources said.
