Letter bomb intercepted

[TamilNet, Tuesday, 30 December 1997, 23:59 GMT]
A greeting card bomb addressed to the chief inspector of the Batticaloa Police station was discovered and defused this morning around 10.30 a.m.

Police sources in Batticaloa said that the greeting card had been sent from Onthachchi Madam, about 24 kilometers north of the Batticaloa town.

Police blamed the LTTE's military intelligence unit in the district for the card bomb.

A TELO cadre working with the Sri Lankan army in Batticaloa was seriously injured and died later when a letter bomb blew up on his face last year.

Another TELO cadre working for the STF at the Manmunai ferry was injured in 1995 when a cigarette he lit exploded on his face.
