Social workers in the Vanni said that 4481 people belonging to 1081 families have been displaced by the onslaught of the eight month old Operation Jayasikurui of the Sri Lankan army.
Of these 4481 people have settled temporarily in the Karachchi division, 356 people in Kandawalai and 3068 people in Pooneryn.
Most of these civilians had to flee their villages overnight as the Sri Lankan army advancing to capture the A-9 highway moved in behind artillery barrage.
Others had to abandon their homes which were within heavy artillery and mortar range of the Jayasikurui troops.
