Soldiers barred university staff who reported to work in the morning from entering the campus. The Batticaloa district's hinterland, controlled by the Tigers, lies less than two kilometres west of the Eastern University campus in Vanthaarumoolai.

Meanwhile a policeman was shot dead by unidentified armed men at Eravur, 14 km. north of Batticaloa, around 11.45 p.m. Wednesday. The policeman, M.Nazar was on his way for duty at the Batticaloa police station sources said.
