Jaffna University shut down

Jaffna University has been closed for an indefinite period following a week long protest by students against the arrest of their colleague by Sri Lanka Army soldiers on 2 July.

The Vice Chancellor has ordered the University Campus out of bounce for the students and asked them to vacate hostels.

Meanwhile undergraduates at the Eastern University in Batticaloa picketed Tuesday morning, urging the University authorities to secure the release of the detained student and to re-open the Jaffna campus.

More than 250 students at the Vavuniya Campus of the Jaffna University held a protest on Monday against the arrest of former Science Faculty Student Union Secretary Mr.Thivyan.
