The Ceylon Tamil Teachers Union (CTTU) has strongly condemned the closure of Jaffna University. "We request the Govt. to reopen the University of Jaffna immediately" said Mr. Mahasivam, General Secretary of the CTTU.

At a meeting of the Executive Committee held Tuesday evening in Trincomalee, the CTTU decided to hold a token-strike to press for the re-opening of Jaffna University and other demands.

"On July 21, all teachers and principals in the North and East will report sick as a token protest," Mr.Mahasivam said.

"CTTU's protest will demand the Govt. to expedite the peace process facilitated by Norway. The protest will also highlight the teachers' demand for payments of arrears for salary and risk allowance."
