Grenade attack in Vavuniya

Three policemen were wounded in a grenade attack by Liberation Tigers at Koomankulam in Vavuniya around 11.30 a.m. Tuesday. The police said two of the attackers were killed and another escaped with injuries when they retaliated.

The Police said the youths who were travelling in an auto-rikshaw lobbed a grenade and opened fire when they stopped the vehicle at a check post.

Police and army reinforcement rushed to the area and conducted a search operation.

The wounded policemen were admitted at the Anuradhapura hospital.

Shells were fired from Sri Lanka Army camp in Vavuniya towards LTTE held areas following the incident, residents in the northern town said.
