Mullaitivu residents to fund local schools[TamilNet, Tuesday, 06 January 1998, 23:59 GMT]Parents and well wishers have collected 191,000 rupees through the Peoples' Welfare Society of Mullaitivu to repair the Kallappaadu and Vattuvakal schools, which were damaged by shelling and bombing between 1990 and 1996, said sources in Vavuniya. There had been no possibility of repairing the school buildings earlier because the areas were in the no-go zone by the Mullaithivu SLA base complex. NGOs and welfare organisations have been compelled to step in to restore public amenities in the war stricken areas as the Sri Lankan government continues to impose a ban on most building materials and deny funding for repairs
