Campaigning to stop on January 26

[TamilNet, Sunday, 11 January 1998, 23:59 GMT]
The Sri Lankan Police in Jaffna called yet another meeting with the Tamil parties this morning to discuss arrangements for the forthcoming local polls.

The parties were told that they should stop campaigning on January 26, three days before the elections and that each party can appoint two of its members as polling agents at each polling booth.

The Police also stipulated that on election day, if a candidate of a party were to come to the polling booth to cast his vote while a candidate of another party is inside marking his ballot paper, the former would have to remain outside until the latter had finished casting his vote.

This rule has been introduced to avoid clashes in polling booths said Police sources in jaffna.
