The Commander of Sri Lanka Navy in the islands off the Jaffna coast has ordered all cooperative stores, government departments and offices in the area to hand over a copy of the keys to their safes, sources said.
The order was issued at a meeting called by the Navy chief with the general managers of the co-ops and government departmental heads. According to this new regulation, one key to their safes must be handed over to the Navy in the evening and re-collected in the morning.
One of those present at the meeting had demanded, "If whole of Sri Lanka is one nation then how can there be different rules and regulations for the islets and the rest of the island". The Naval commander had ignored the question.
