Polling cards distributed

[TamilNet, Sunday, 18 January 1998, 23:59 GMT]
Polling cards for the Local Government elections in the Jaffna peninsula were distributed today, except for the Jaffna Municipal council and Waligamam north Pradeshiya Sabha.

Polling cards for Jaffna Municipal Council and Waligamam north Pradeshiya Sabha are delayed because there was an appeal filed by the TULF on the rejection of its nominations. The Sri Lankan court of appeal on Friday said that the rejection of TULF was not valid.

The TULF is to begin its campaign. Party sources said that they will leave for Jaffna as soon as the travel arrangements are completed.

Meanwhile 7 assistant commissioners of elections have arrived at Jaffna Katcheri for the election duties, and 25 more are expected to arrive this week.

The Sri Lankan Government said that it will send atleast 1500 more government servants for the Jaffna elections duties.
