The United National Front government Sunday announced that it will lift the ban on the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam with effect from September 6, ten days ahead of direct talks begin in Thailand, the state run Sri Lanka Broadcasting Corporation reported Sunday.

"With the removal of the proscription, the LTTE can now participate in the talks scheduled to begin on September 16 in Thailand with more confidence and freedom," the radio reported, quoting government sources.

The LTTE will become a lawful organisation in the country with the removal of proscription on it, which came into force four year ago, government sources said.
