Several arrests in Vavuniya

[TamilNet, Wednesday, 21 January 1998, 23:59 GMT]
21 people were arrested in 3 separate incidents in Vavuniya on Monday and Tuesday said sources in Vavuniya.

16 persons, including 3 women and 2 children were arrested by the Sri Lankan Army, last night in Rasendra Puliyankulam, 10 km west of Vavuniya.

2 persons were arrested in a tea-shop in Vavuniya town yesterday and 3 persons were arrested at the Vavuniya main bus terminal on Monday.

No one has been released as yet.

Sources in Vavuniya said that these arrests were made in connection with the SLA's investigation regarding an LTTE unit which is said to be operating in Vavuniya town.

The Sri Lankan police and military claim that a Tiger 'pistol group' has been responsible for killing many of the army's informants within the town.
