Recently opened Police station by the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) in Palugamam has recorded 135 complaints from the residentsof the surrounding villages in the last two weeks, sources close the security division of the LTTE said.

LTTE police posts which were functioning in Batticaloa-Ampara districts in 1996 and 1997 were closed due to the war in 1997, and the Inspectors and Officers were transferred to Vanni. Following the cessation of hostilities, the LTTE opened its first police station in the east on the 5th of this month to provide security and maintain order in the area.

Sources say plans are afoot to expand the number of Police Stations in Batticaloa-Ampara district.

Land disputes and disputes related to exchange of money form the majority of complaints handled by the Police Officers, sources said. Four murders have also been investigated by the Palugamam station in the last two weeks.

Sources say that civilians from Government controlled areas too are seeking help at LTTE police stations to help resolve disputes. Villagers say that the station has successfully helped solve several long standing disputes within the short time it has been functioning.
