Jaffna local bodies to be administered by special commissioners
[TamilNet, Tuesday, 14 January 2003, 14:14 GMT]
The life term of all local authorities in the Jaffna district, which expires on February this year, will not be extended. Instead special commissioners will be appointed to administer these local bodies. A decision this effect was taken at the discussion between the Tamil National Alliance parliamentary delegation and the government group led by the Prime Minister held Tuesday, TNA sources said.
Most of the local authorities in Jaffna district are now under the administration of the para military Eelam Peoples Democratic Party (EPDP) since the election held three years ago. The Tamil United Liberation Front administers the Jaffna Municipal Council. The Peoples Liberation Organization of Tamil Eelam (PLOTE) administers few local bodies, sources said.
The TNA delegation at the Tuesday discussion requested the Prime Minister not to extend the life term of the Jaffna local authorities that expires in February but to administer these institutions through special commissioners.
The Prime Minister agreed to the request, TNA sources said.
Furthermore the Prime Minister agreed to call for fresh nominations before holding elections to the local authorities in the eastern province, which were postponed till June this year after accepting nominations last year. The government postponed elections to local bodies in east on a request by the Tamil National Alliance, TNA sources said.
The Prime Minister had told the TNA delegation that a special law would be brought to parliament enabling the Elections Commissioner to call for fresh nominations to such local bodies, sources said.
