The strike in Sri Lanka's plantation sector was called off today following talks between the trade unions, representatives of the plantation companies and President Chandrika Kumaratunge.

Following two hours of discussions it was announced that trade unions would accept the President's compromise proposals earlier of 95 rupees (US $ 1.53) and 6 rupees price bonus.

However, all the conditions of the deal between the trade unions and the plantation companies have not been clearly spelt out.

It was, however, stated that the 6 rupees payment wouldn't be included in the Employment Provident Fund (EPF) and other schemes.
