The North East Tuesday observed a day of mourning for the eleven LTTE cadres and one patriot who were killed when the Sri Lanka Navy sank an LTTE oil tanker on June 14 in international waters off the Mullaitivu coast.

The main event took place at the Valvettithurai Amman temple premises. Photographs of the LTTE cadres and a patriot killed in the SLN attack were taken in a procession from the Nediayakadu Pillaiyar Temple to the Amman Temple in Valvettithurai, sources said.

Meanwhile, the memorial constructed in memory of Lt. Col. Kathir (Selvaretnam Sasinthiran), one of the twelve killed in the SLN attack, was unveiled Tuesday at the Kodikamam war cemetery. Earlier, a photograph of Lt Col. Kathir was taken in a procession from his house in Meesalai in the Thenamaradchchi division around 11.30 a.m. with band music in attendance. A large number of people, including LTTE cadres, participated in the procession, sources said.

When the procession went through the Kandy road, a large number of students assembled at the Puttur junction, where an army checkpoint is located, and paid floral tributes to the dead LTTE cadre, sources said. The vehicular traffic through Kandy road came to a standstill for few hours due to congestion, the sources said.

Thereafter, a meeting was held at the Meesalai Veerasingham Maha Vidiyalayam and the photograph of Lt Col. Kathir was taken to the war cemetery, sources said
