Kalutara detainee on a fasting campaign[TamilNet, Tuesday, 05 August 2003, 15:31 GMT]A Tamil youth detained at the Kalutara prison without trial is sitting on the prison’s roof and fasting, saying that the Sri Lankan government should either bring a case against him and expedite it or release him, the Jaffna-based Tamil language daily, Uthayan, reported Tuesday. In the past, the Kalutara detainees held under the Prevention of Terrorism Act (PTA) without trial conducted fasting campaigns several times, demanding that cases be brought against them or they should be released. Repeated assurances given to the prisoners by the Sri Lankan government, including some senior United National Front government ministers, have not been honored, and hundreds of Tamil youths are still languishing in jail without trial, the Uthayan said.
