Elaborate arrangements are being made to observe the final day of the commeomration of the 16th anniversary of the death of Lt. Col.Thileepan throughout the Northeast province on Friday with a token fasting and cultural event depicting the freedom struggle of Tamils, sources said.

The twelve-day long commemorative celebrations began on September 12, the day sixteen years ago Lt Col.Thileepan commenced his historic fasting unto death, putting forward five demands on behalf of Northeastern Tamils to the Indian government, which had signed an agreement with Sri Lanka in July 1987, saying it would find a solution to the ethnic conflict, sources said.

Organizers have made arrangement to hold a commemoration meeting at the same site on Thursday, sources said.

In several parts of the northeast province volunteer campaigns, sports meets and cultural events were held in memory of Lt Col. Thileepan during the last ten days, sources said.

On the final day, Friday, a token fasting and meeting has been organized at the office of the LTTE Trincomalee town political office. Such events are to take place at Sampoor, Nilaveli, Eachilampathu, Tampalakamam, Kuchchaveli, Nilaveli and several other villages in the Trincomalee district, sources said.
