Sri Lanka Army (SLA) shelling has killed and maimed increasing number of pregnant mothers during the last 3 weeks in Vanni. On 27 March, a 30-year-old mother, Sivakumar Poomalar, was brought to the makeshift hospital at Puthumaaththa'lan with injuries. Doctors said they carried out emergency cesarean laprotomy, but were unable to save the child, which was found with head injuries.
