Hundreds of upcountry workers staged a protest campaign at George R.De Silva park in Kandy Saturday, demanding increase in salary and opposing privatization of tea estates. The protest was organized by the Union of Upcountry workers and Human Rights Development society. The New Left Front and several other unions also participated, sources in Kandy said.
The protesters also voiced their opposition against the upcountry Tamil parliamentarians who are supporting the government, sources said. The protesters handed a memorandum listing their grievences to the Government Agent (GA) and requested him to forward the memorandum to Sri Lanka's President. The memorandum said that if a satisfactory response is not received they will continue the picketing campaign against the Sri Lanka Government and Private tea companies,
