SLA offers 'high security' protection
[TamilNet, Tuesday, 19 May 1998, 23:59 GMT]
Tamil United Liberation Front (TULF) members of the Jaffna Municipal Council were invited to a meeting today from 9:30 a.m. to 12:00 noon at the 512 Brigade (Jaffna Brigade) headquarters at the Gnanam Hotel, to discuss the councilors' future security, said sources in Jaffna.
Captain Ramanayake of the SLA, who met the councilors told them that if the councilors agreed to live in a designated area, the SLA would provide them with security. This area would be a high security zone where stringent restrictions on entrance would be imposed by the SLA, said sources. These measures follow the brazen assassination of Jaffna's TULF Mayor Sarojini Yogeswaran on Sunday morning in Jaffna town, and the escape of the attackers. Several Tamil groups have seats in the JMC, including the Eelam Peoples' Democratic Party (EPDP). Apart from the TULF, the groups have armed wings in Jaffna and elsewhere.
