A Tamil youth who was abducted by three armed men from his home in Erlalai East, Jaffna Thursday at 11 p.m. was found near a cemetary in Chunnakam with serious cut wounds to his body inflicted by a sharp instrument, sources in Jaffna said. Kottiyal Hindu cemetary where the injured youth was found is located in Chunnakam Road, Punnalaikattuvan nearly 3 k.m. south of Erlalai where he was abducted.
Only the sound of a Sri Lanka Army (SLA) patrol near the cemetary prevented the armed men from killing Thevarajah Vimalanathan, 26, local residents said. He was taken to the Chunnakam Police and was admitted to the Jaffna Teaching Hospital after nearly seven hours, sources said. Vimalanathan is undergoing emergency surgery and his condition is serious, hospital sources said. Although the identity of the armed attackers are not known, local residents allege that the Vimalanathan had close links with local police and suspect that he may have functioned as an informer to the Sri Lanka military and police.
