Jaffna youth seeks protection with HRC

One more Tamil civilian sought protection from the Jaffna branch of the Human rights Commission (HRC) Tuesday, HRC officials said. The 24-year old youth is from Allaippiddy in Jaffna islets and was staying as an internally displaced person at the IDP camp in Our Lady of Rosary (OLR) church when he sought safety with the HRC, officials added.
The youth told HRC officials that unidentified men had come to the camp in search of him around 3:30 p.m Tuesday. Fearing for his life, he with his wife and two children called in at HRC office next to the church and in front of the 51.2 Brigade Head office. Sri Lanka Army office for issuing Pass and tickets for the people traveling out of Jaffna by ship is located on the opposite side of the church. The HRC officials obtained order from Jaffna courts to have the youth in protective custody at Jaffna prison, and asked his wife and children to continue to stay at the IDP camp. Earlier, two brothers from Allaippiddy who were staying with their relatives at Navanthurai were shot dead by assailants believed to be members of SLA intelligent on 27 November. One of their sisters was injured in this pre-dawn killing.
