Children wounded by mine

Eight children were seriously wounded when a can they had picked up in the shrub jungle behind the Kalmadu SLA army camp, 33 km north of Batticaloa, exploded this afternoon around 2 p.m.

Villagers and the army who had gone to the spot upon hearing the explosion rushed the injured children to the Valaichenai hospital.

Hospital sources said the condition of three are very critical.

The Children are from very poor families who live in the village of Kalmadu near Valaichenai. They had gone to collect firewood in the shrub jungle behind the army camp.
