Batticaloa district PC results challenged in court

The main opposition United National Party (UNP) Thursday filed a petition in the Court of Appeal challenging the validity of the results of the Batticaloa district in the east provincial council which was held on May 10. Three candidates of the UNP who contested the election filed the petition through their lawyer G.G.Arulpiragasam, legal sources said.
The petitioners have cited the Commissioner of Elections, Chief Minister Pillaiyan, Batticaloa Government Agent, Minister Ameer Ali, and fourteen other related government officers as respondents. The petitioners have prayed in the suit seeking the court to annul the results of the Batticaloa district results as the election was not conducted according rules and regulations of the election commission. Several malpractices took place on the polling day threatening genuine voters from going to the polling stations, the petition added. TMVP led chief minister Pillaiyan had intimidated voters during the electioneering and on the polling day, the petition further sai according to legal sources.
