A 39-year-old motor mechanic from Koappaay sought protection to his life with Human Rights Commission (HRC) Jaffna office Friday due to death threats by Sri Lanka Army (SLA) soldiers and SLA-backed paramilitary men, according to his complaints to HRC officials. The officials are taking action to place him in the protective custody of Jaffna Prison through Jaffna court.
Three persons from Irupaalai SLA camp had come to the motor mechanic's home recently and tried to take him away forcibly, he told the HRC. He had gone under ground for some days but was forced to seek protection as the SLA soldiers who had confiscated his hand phone and National Identity Card (NIC) had been continually intimidating his wife demanding him to appear at their camp to get back the confiscated things, he further said in his complaint. The motor mechanic is the father of two children. The Irupaalai SLA soldiers had earlier taken him in for interrogagtion and later released him.
