Sinhala colony of Weli-oya extended by 47 sq km in Vanni

Occupying Colombo has silently absorbed lands from the adjoining districts of Vavuniyaa and Trincomalee to expand the recently Sinhalicised Weli-oya (Ma'nal-aa'ru in Tamil) division. A year ago, the figure of land was at 117.1 sq km. Now, the officials at Mullaith-theevu District Secretariat confirm that the land use of the ‘Sinhala Only’ division as 164.2 sq km. The additional 47 km sq is around 11,639 acres in extent. The division that was carved out for the exclusive purpose of Sinhalicisation to wedge the North from the East is getting bigger and bigger, they said.

The division has now wedged the contiguity between the Tamil districts Vavuniyaa in the Northern Province and Trincomalee in the Eastern Province, while it established contiguity with the Sinhala district Anuradhapura in the North Central Province.
Initially, the division was carved out by joining territories of the Mullaith-theevu district as well as lands of the Vavuniyaa district. Earlier, Mullaith-theevu district didn’t have a common boundary with Anuradhapura. Providing common boundary for Sinhala-colonised Weli-oya of Mullaith-theevu with the Sinhala NW province became possible only by wedging the contiguity of the Tamil districts of Vavuniyaa and Trincomalee. In the 2017 Northern Province Statistical Handbook, the slot on Weli-oya has been left blank without specifying the extent of land. The other five divisions were specified as follows: Karai-thu'raip-pattu 728.6 sq km, Oddu-chuddaan 618 sq km, Puthuk-kudiyiruppu 350 sq km, Maanthai-East 494 sq km, and Thu'nukkaay 326.3 sq km. The total extent of land in the district is 2516.9 sq km, including forest area excluding large inland water, according to the NPC handbook.
