Kumaratunga urges more donations for war

The Sri Lankan President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga asked employees in the government and in public and private companies to donate 2 days of their salaries to the state's war fund to fight the Liberation Tigers in an address to the nation Tuesday. She asserted that the Sri Lankan army is determined to win the war.
She urged people to keep functions and celebrations low key and to contribute monies saved thereby to the national defence fund to finance the war. The Sri Lankan President said that the June 7 will be observed as soldiers' day. She explained how her government is working towards the welfare of the Sri Lankan security forces personnel. "We are fighting to safeguard the sovereignty, territorial integrity and unity of the country" Kumaratunga said.
