Two ten month old infants, Raja Welden Denisla and Sivarajah Thamilini, died of malnutrion in the Gopi settlement in Jeyapuram in the Vanni this week. The children could not be saved as there is a severe scarcity of medicine in the area said NGO sources today.
There are 264 families in this settlement. None of them have any means of income and are unable to have at least one square meal a day said the sources. Further west, the people of Moondaampiddy a small fishing village near Vellankulam in Mannar mainland are also in a similar predicament. There are more than 250 families here and none are gainfully employed due to the war. Dry rations and medicine are extremely scarce here.
