A Sri Lanka Navy (SLN) soldier Friday morning escaped from the Sri Lanka Navy detachment at Karainagar in Jaffna district and surrendered to the residents of the area. Later he was handed over to Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam officials in Karainagar, military sources said

The Karainagar office of the LTTE immediately informed the incident to the Sri Lanka Monitoring Mission (SLMM) in Jaffna. SLMM monitors rushed to the site and took the navy personnel into their custody and handed him back to the Karainagar navy unit despite repeated pleas made by the escapee that he should be allowed to go home, sources said.
