Two youths shot dead in Trincomalee

A policeman attached to Valvettithurai police station and a Sri Lanka Army (SLA) trooper were killed by a remotely triggered claymore blast Monday around 12:45 a.m., when the SLA road patrol was attacked between Udupidy and Valvetithurai in Vadmaradchchi north, police sources said. The SLA unit was on its way Valvettithurai from the Udupidy junction SLA camp when the attack occurred.

Claymore mine recovered in Murunkan

A minor employee of the Murunkan general hospital was arrested Thursday in connection with the discovery of a live claymore mine in a by-lane along Mannar-Madawachchi (A-14) highway at 7:30 a.m. in the Murunkan police division. The suspect, Sebastian Vethanayagam, 41, father of four children, was produced in Mannar courts Friday morning after interrogation, legal sources said.

The nineteenth death anniversary of Lt. Col. Thileepan, a political leader of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam, who fasted unto death in 1987, and the fifth death anniversary of Col. Shankar, a senior commander and the founder of the Tiger air-wing, who was killed in a Sri Lankan Deep Penetration Unit triggered Claymore mine in Vanni in 2001, were commemorated in NorthEast on Tuesday. Hundreds of people took part in token fasts. Temple and church bells were rung at 10:48 a.m. The leader of the LTTE, Mr. V. Pirapaharan, paid homage to Thileepan and Shankar at a commemoration event.

Two fellow wounded airmen were transferred to Anuradhapura hospital. Sri Lankan forces in the area opened fire after the Claymore explosion, residents said.
