JVP awaits invitation to resume talks with SLFP

The Sinhala nationalist cum Marxist Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) said Wednesday it has not received official invitation from the Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP), chief constituent of the main opposition Peoples Alliance regarding the resumption of failed talks to form a political alliance to oust the present United National Front government from power, political sources said.

The JVP's propaganda secretary and parliamentarian, Mr.Wimal Weerawanse, said his party's politburo would be summoned once the SLFP extended an invitation, sources said.

He assured that future talks with the SLFP would be conducted in a more transparent manner.

He denied news reports that his party leader, Mr.Somawanse Amarasinghe, had a telephone conversation with Sri Lanka's Presdient Ms. Chandrika Kumaratunge. "No such conversation had taken place with Ms.Kumaratunge. Such media reports are aimed at creating dissension and misunderstanding in both parties," said Mr.Weerawanse.

Meanwhile, the five-day anti-peace march organized by the Patriotic National Movement, which comprises the JVP, SLFP, the Mahajana Eksath Peramuna (MEP) and leading members of Maha Sangha, arrived in Colombo Wednesday evening, sources said.

The fifth day march resumed from Kadawatte Wednesday morning and arrived first at Campel Park and from there it proceeded to its final destination Lipton' Square, sources said.

Mr. Wimal Weerawanse and parliamentarian Mr. Dinesh Gunawardene (MEP), Western Provincial Governor, Mr.Alavi Moulana, People's Alliance (PA) parliamentarians Messrs. Arjuna Ranatunge, Mangala Samaraweera, Anura Bandaranaike and Jeyaraj Fernandopulle were seen in the frontline of the anti-peace march, sources said.
