Human skeletons were found Monday under the debris of the Kilinochchi provincial health services building during its reconstruction, sources said.
The Sri Lanka Army occupied the Kilinochchi town area following its ‘Sath Jaya’ military operation in 1996, and the occupation lasted until when the area was re-captured by the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam in 1998. During the SLA’s two years of occupation in Kilinochchi, 184 civilians who visited the area to inspect their lands and homes have been reported as disappeared. Since the recapture of Kilinochchi by the LTTE in 1998, 712 human skeletons have been found so far. The skeletons, bones and other evidence were unearthed in toilet pits, wells, abandoned sentries and riverbeds. Relatives of the disappeared have so far identified 12 of the skeletons as those of the disappeared, based on clothes and other evidence gathered during the discovery of the skeletons.
