SLA intensifies checking in Batticaloa

Sri Lanka Army (SLA) stepped up checking pedestrians and
vehicles at several key roads and junctions in Batticaloa
district inconveniencing civilians and causing delays to
vehicular traffic, sources in Batticaloa said.
Morning buses operating on the Batticaloa-Colombo road are stopped
at Sathurukondaan and the passengers body searched, travellers
complained. At the checkpoint near the Kumburumoolai SLA camp, located 30km north of Batticaloa town, SLA soldiers routinely stop and examine the
vehicles and record the details of the vehicles, sources said. Lorries carrying cement and other construction materials are ordered
to stay at the Kumburumoolai camp promises overnight and then escorted by Police personal to Batticaloa the following morning, vehicle owners complained. Police sources said that these procedures are instituted to prevent construction materials from falling into Liberation Tigers' hands.
