NE observes death anniversary of LTTE leaders

The sixteenth death anniversary of twelve LTTE cadres, including senior commanders Lt. Col. Pulendran and Lt. Col. Kumarappa, was held at Theeruvil in Valvettithurai in Jaffna district Sunday with the opening of the renovated memorial tomb, which was destroyed by the Sri Lanka Army when it captured the peninsula in 1996, sources said.

Lt. Col. Pulendran and Lt. Col. Kumarappa and ten other LTTE cadres were arrested by the Sri Lanka Navy in the Mullaitivu Sea and handed over to the Sri Lanka Army located in Palaly headquarters sixteen years ago on this day.

When the SLA attempted to remove them to Colombo, they committed suicide on October 5, 1987 at the Palaly SLA headquarters, which is said to have precipitated to the war between the LTTE and the Indian Peace Keeping Force in the northeast province, sources said.

The destroyed memorial tomb was renovated by Vadamarachchi north fisheries co-operatives societies and people’s organizations.

Miss Kalyani, head of the Sea Tigers political unit of the LTTE in Valvettithurai, presided over the event. The general flame of sacrifice was lit by the Attack Commander of the Sea Tigers, Saleem, and Vadamarachchi political head, Daya, hoisted the Thamileelam national flag.

Sea Tigers Commander Mangales declared open the renovated memorial tomb by cutting the ribbon. Parents of the twelve LTTE martyrs lit the flame of sacrifice and paid homage by garlanding their photographs. Thereafter members of public paid their homage to the dead LTTE leaders, sources said.

LTTE Jaffna district political head Mr.C.Ilamparuthi delivered the keynote address. Vadamarachchi north fisheries societies federation secretary Mr.P.Suriyakumaran, Jaffna district Tamil National Alliance parliamentarians Mr.A.Vinayagamoorthy and Mr.M.K.Sivajilingam, Jaffna university lecturer Mr.P.Chandrasekaram and Sea Tigers activist Maravan also spoke.

Meanwhile, the Vadamarachchi LTTE political head Mr.Daya brought to the notice of the Sri Lanka Monitoring Mission monitors attending the event at Theeruvil Sunday that the SLA soldiers had forcibly removed wall posters pasted to commemorate the death anniversary of the dead LTTE leaders. However the SLMM monitors present at the site did not take any steps in regard to the complaint, sources said

Jaffna district LTTE political head Mr.Ilamparuthi in his keynote address condemned the Sri Lanka Army for having involved in sabotage activities to stop the death anniversary celebration.

The SLA should understand that Tamils are fighting to achieve their legitimate rights, said Mr.Ilamparuthi.

Tamils should not forgive it if the SLA continued to undermine the aspirations of Tamils and disrupted the death anniversary events of the dead LTTE leaders, he added.

In Trincomalee town, at the office of the LTTE Trincomalee town political division, the sixteenth death anniversary of twelve LTTE cadres was observed. Former member of the Trincomalee Urban Council Mr.S.Sriskandarajah lit the general flame of sacrifice and TEEDOR Trincomalee head Mr.Tharman hoisted the Thamileelam national flag. Mr.Thennavan, head of the LTTE Trincomalee district Martyrs’ Division lit the flame of sacrifice in the front of the photographs of twelve LTTE cadres.
