LTTE-Muslim representatives meet in Trincomalee

The Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam and the All Ceylon Jemiyyathul Ulama in Kinniya Monday signed an agreement regarding cultivating paddy lands surrounding the Kurankupanchan LTTE camp area in the Kinniya division in Trincomalee, sources said.
Trincomalee district political head, Mr.Thilak. and TEEDOR Trincomalee head Mr.Tharman signed the agreeement on behalf of the LTTE, sources said. The secretary of the All Ceylon Jemiyyathul Ulama in Kinniya, Mr.A.S.Jafeer, and Kurankupanchan Farmers' Association President, Mr.M.A.M.Raheem, signed the agreement on behalf of Muslim cultivators, the sources said. The agreement was signed in the presence of the acting head of the Sri Lanka Monitoring Mission in Trincomalee, Mr. Hurt Spur, and monitor Ms. Margaret Krook. The discussion, which commenced Monday around 9.30 a.m., concluded after reaching a consensus on several issues, SLMM sources said. Mr. Hurt Spur said that the discussion between LTTE and Muslim representatives was constructive and held in a cordial atmosphere. The outcome of talks was encouraging as both parties adopted a positive attitude in reaching consensus on several issues during the discussion, which was facilitated by the SLMM, he added. The agreement states: - The cultivators of all the paddy lands, which are fifty meters away from the Kurankupanchan camp, are at liberty to cultivate such paddy lands.
A decision would be taken within the next two weeks about the cultivation of lands in the aforesaid cultivation area of Kurankupanchan.
There is no objection whatsoever about the development of the Vellankulam tank or cultivation of lands falling under the above tank.
The next meeting with the representatives of the cultivators will take place commencing at 10 a.m. on 18.10.2003 at the Alankerni Maha Vidyalayam.
