Hunger strike mother dies

Ms. Aarumugam Thavamany (50) from Columbuthurai, near Jaffna town, who was grieving over the disappearance of her daughter for one and a half years, died from sickness induced by a long period of self-inflicted starvation, said sources in Jaffna.

Thavamany's daughter Sivaajini, a General Certificate of Education Ordinary Level student at Thuraiappah Mahaviththiyalayam, was arrested at the Kannaker Road junction in Columbuthurai in mid-1996.

The mother who was living in hope of seeing her daughter for the past one and half years was also suffering from severe depression, said sources.

The Society of Arrested and Disappeared Persons in Jaffna extended its condolences on Ms. Thavamany's death.
