Jaffna Magistrate orders bail for eight Tamil civilians

The Jaffna Magistrate Mr.R.T.Viknarajah Monday released eight Tamil civilians of the ten who were arrested and remanded in connection with some incidents that took place Saturday on bail with a warning that they should not interfere with the police investigation, court sources said.

The police Saturday arrested ten Tamil civilians following some incidents that had taken place at Mampalam junction in Ariyalai in Jaffna town consequent to an accident in which an army truck crashed into the three-wheeler causing heavy damages to the vehicle

Of the ten, six Tamil civilians were produced in court alleging that they had "assaulted" army soldiers and police personnel, sources said.

Two other suspects Mr. Ramanathan Ramtheesan (24) and Mr. Balasingham Dayniharan (21) were not produced in court as they had been admitted in Jaffna teaching hospital with injuries alleged to have been caused by army soldiers and police personnel after their arrest. However the Magistrate instructed the Police to produce two suspects in courts on Wednesday, legal sources said.

Meanwhile Jaffna Three Wheelers' Association Monday announced that it would launch a boycott campaign Tuesday condemning the attack on journalists, civilians and causing damages to a three wheeler by the army soldiers and police on Saturday at Mampalam junction in Ariyalai in Jaffna town, court sources said.

No three-wheeler would be on the road Tuesday, association sources said.
