Sixteen-hour curfew imposed in Kinniya, 16 k.m. south of Trincomalee was lifted at 6 a.m. Friday morning. However, the re-imposition of curfew depends on developments during the day, police sources said.
A large number of police personnel and Sri Lanka Army soldiers are deployed at strategic places and junctions in Kinniya. The Chinabay Police have now launched investigation into the attacks on homes of two parliamentarians in Kinniya Thursday, the sources said. Meanwhile the Liberation Tigers Friday denied any involvement in hijacking a cart belonging to a Muslim person that led to the hartal and tension in Kinniya. "The incident was a staged one by some elements that are working actively to derail the peace process," LTTE Trincomalee district political head Mr.S.Tilak told TamilNet.
