SLA to inspect fishermen's passes

The Sri Lanka Army in the Munai area of Point Pedro in the Jaffna district Tuesday went back to inspecting fishermen’s passes by itself, dropping the Sri Lankan Police supervision that was agreed two weeks ago, and the fishermen fear that this could renew the tensions between fishermen and the SLA, the president of the fisheries society in Munai, Mr. A. Arulthas, said Wednesday.

Two weeks ago, the SLA agreed to Police supervision of its inspection of fishermen’s passes, following complaints from fishermen that the SLA personnel in Munai attacked them.

But that arrangement was effectively abandoned Tuesday and the Police will no longer be involved, sources said.
